neither here nor there
oh yes, online shopping is also very expensive...
feeling quite weird today. like i cant be happy cos there's something gnawing at the back of my heart and yet i cant be sad cos there's so much to be happy about.
i feel like i cant even just be. cant just be content. cant just be indifferent. cant just be middle of the road. cant just be nothing.
weird weird weird :S

online shopping is not all fun
organizing an online shopping spree is frustratingly fun.
maybe more frustrating than fun sometimes.
and im talking about a shopping spree from only ONE website.
one of frustrating parts is realising that accounting principles actually do come into play...
it's scary being in charge of everyone's money. money in US dollars. what if i order the wrong size or pattern? what if there's a fraud on my card?
i painstakingly sieved through the long list of merchandise to add up each person's cost, and total overall cost and WAHEY! horror of horrors. how come it doesnt bloody match the total the website has counted out for me? count again, count again! how can i trust myself with numbers? me, who hasnt touched maths since dropping CMaths in J1.
recount recount bloody recount. money is hard-earned. and it's not even my own money we're talking about here. i owe it to everyone to be meticulous. even if it kills me, ill get it right!!!
after endless number crunching, i realised to my utter disbelief and irritation, that it's the bloody website's fault.
$%^&*(^%
turns out they list every second-last item as $0. just wtf is it playing at? it's NOT free of charge, it IS in stock and it still shows $0 no matter how many times i delete and re-add it or refresh the page. is it merely a website error, and ill still get that particular item, or is it not included in the list at all? i mean, it cant be free, what!
i've had a long day, it's midnight, and i have to rise early for work tmr. i NEED to get this done in time for delivery so just please WORK WITH ME HERE
i swear for all the trouble and frustration overload they have put me through, it SHOULD be free.
besides, that's what they say in the Services Marketing textbook ;)
i have since sent a polite email to the site but what good does it do.
i still cant get it done tonight.
i cant believe how much i've stressed over this the past couple of days ( i actually dreamed that Len skipped his exams and came back to S'pore early without our stuff!!! ) and now a simple website error has to be the cause of my undoing.
am trying very hard not to curse now.
and that, my friends, is the most frustrating part.
not cussing when the occasion calls for it.
maybe more frustrating than fun sometimes.

My Best Friend's Wedding
i finally caught "My Best Friend's Wedding" last night on tv.
the ending surprised me cos i'd thought all along that julia roberts managed to stop the wedding and get her best friend back.
im glad she didnt and the movie ended the way it did.
i cant say i like the movie much although it moved me to tears.
on both counts it's cos the movie hit unnervingly close to home.
"i had a weird dream last night that some psychopath was trying to break you guys up...
luckily i woke up to reality"

Singapore Idol - down to 3
omigod someone saaaaavve me!
i think i would faint and die if i got a "GEESE from a rose" esp if Sylvester Sim gave it to me
everyone in the lounge, all 10-15 of us, burst out in collective guffaws when he sang that. this is like the worstworstworst example of poor diction he's displayed yet. ((heh heh heh))
okay, but it was still kinda mean of Florence Lian to capitalise on his booboo ((heh heh heh)) and make fun of him. mean, but nevertheless very helpful. i can just imagine his fans esp the lil girls voting frantically for him right this moment.
i guess maybe this is the Great Singapore Idol Paradox. you create a faux pas to gain the sympathy of the undecided voters and greater loyalty of existing voters.
good move, sly.

i need a huggable
im an official wuss...
i couldn't sleep last night cos i didnt have anything huggable to hug to sleep.
gawwd.
since when did i get so dependent on a cushion/stuffed thing to lull me to sleep? i never used to particularly like stuffed toys, but last night, i felt empty...
i finally drifted off into fitful sleep at 530... and i have more than half the syllabus to study before the exam tmr.
how am i gonna sleep tonight?

"Why aren't you married yet?"
What to say when people ask you
"Why aren't you married yet?"
1. Because it'll take the spontaneity out of dating.
2. Why aren't you thin yet?
3. Because it's not legal in Singapore at the moment.
4. You proposing, ah?
5. I'm still looking for that special someone who won't report me to the police.
6. I'm waiting for your daughter to turn 18 first.
7. My mail order bride norchat come.
8. Because human-computer marriages are still not recognized.
9. I'm waiting for you to die so I can marry your husband.
10. I'm getting married in May... "May" the day never come.
11. I haven't found the right sheep.
12. What? And spoil my great sex life?
my personal favourite is #2. :D

unmarried, and loving it
i received a proposition last week.
a guy ive known for some years asked me to attend a wedding dinner with him and pose as his girlfriend. he's in his late 20's and working now, and i suppose his colleagues must have been pressuring him to get a girl and get hitched quick.
how disenchanting. ive predicted myself to wind up as an old maid, so i dread the time when ill be on the receiving end of this undue annoyance. why cant ppl just give unmarrieds a break? whatever the reason for not wanting to have and to hold, it's none of anybody else's business.
ive seen how marrieds do it to the unmarrieds. they try not to do it in a rude way, so they kinda beat around the bush, and broach it as a joke. "aiyah, if you dont get married soon hor, my kids cannot collect one more ang pao for Chinese New Year leh"
..........
it's highly unlikely that anyone's gonna feel inclined to jump into the bandwagon just so your ruddy kids can waste more money on candy to rot their teeth.
strangely, i seem to be seeing this particular topic popping up. i just saw an old episode of SATC on the married pigs or sth like that. and i caught "Bridget Jones Diary' on the telly last night.
Married Pig 1: seriously, the office is full of single girls in their 30's. fine physical specimens, but they just can't seem to hold down a chap.
Married Pig 2 : (to Bridget) yes, why is it there are so many unmarried women in their 30's these days?
Bridget: i don't know... i suppose it doesn't help that underneath our clothes, our entire bodies are covered in scales.

friendster hacked
'tis strange.
i rarely log on to friendster, and yet when i did today, it was under the account of a friend. the weird thing was the discovery that the last time my personal account logged in was a mere 2 days ago.
unless i've developed severe dementia, i know for a fact that i havent logged on for about.. 3-4 weeks? something along those lines anyway.
filee scared me by saying that her friend got her account hacked into. the hacker even replied her messages and added friends!
my hacker didnt do anything like that tho... i have no idea what his/her/its (it could be a bot?) motive was... make friends with my friends?
how dumb.

The Vagina Monologues
i watched The Vagina Monologues last night. it was fabulously funny and heartbreakingly sad, sometimes simultaneously. i have absolutely no complaints about the all-Singaporean cast of Nora Samosir, Anita Kapoor and Cynthia Lee. they were great, though it's obvious right from the onset that Nora is the strongest actress and she became the women she was portraying in their monologues. i felt Anita appeared nervous cos she sat with her feet propped up tensely on tiptoes throughout the entire play although her face betrayed no clue. however, her renditions of the different types of orgasmic moans were ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! if i had it my way, and im sure my 3 lovely companions will agree, the play should've paused for 5 minutes after that for us to finish howling and catch our breaths.
after the play, mich asked me why any heterosexual singaporean guy would wanna watch The Vagina Monologues. the ratio of males to females in the audience was roughly 2:3. when she asked me that question, it's assumed that the typical heterosexual singaporean guy would not be interested in the arts, preferring to stay indoors and annihilate soldiers on Halo 2, and neither would they be overtly interested in women's rights, action against violence to women and such. it is also assumed, that probably the only way a man is gonna be interested in a vagina is if he thinks he's gonna get lucky, or if it's on a porn site. gross generalisation, perhaps, but we didn't see any guy there who was not accompanied by a female, and looking like he'd much rather be elsewhere. we concluded that they must have been forced to watch it by the accompanying girlfriend/wife.
the interesting bit about the men last night, is that amongst them, was one who wore a denim skirt. strangely, the only reason why i thought he looked weird was because his white shirt & blue denim skirt combo looked too plain. i kept thinking that a brown felt cowboy fringe on his skirt would look better. and the skirt was a tad too long, reaching past his knees.
and there was this sweet old couple who definitely looked over 70 and who were holding hands. (i wont go into the whole "ain't that sweet, i wanna be just like them when i get old too" blah) the old lady was decked out in a short cheongsam with a red shawl and fabulous red pointy heels.
she had hair exacly like catherine zeta jones in "chicago"
but the most amazing part, is that she had perfectly youthful-looking feet which truly belies her age. they were fair and unwrinkled (unlike the rest of her) and wouldn't look out of place as catherine zeta jone's feet in fact. i couldn't take my eyes off her feet.
how can anyone get jaded when life never ceases to amaze?

woozy head and mini woes
been trying to sleep off the flu the past few days. i thought flu tablets and plenty of water and sleep is supposed to do the trick, so why am i still sniffling and my head still feels foggy?
anyway, im suffering from insomnia. the curious thing is that i have no problems napping on the sofa in the afternoons but i can lie for hours in bed at night and just not fall asleep. what's curiouser is the fact that i have the help of two lil tablets which are supposed to knock me out at bedtime. on all counts, the bedroom and bed are way more conducive for sleep than the living room couch. i guess not all things work out the way they should.
oh, they just opened the 'first ben&jerry's scoop shop in southeast asia' here in singapore. and at the zoo!
i think i better go lie down and rest for a while... before going out. i wonder what i should wear. :D

"The Champion"
this 9pm drama serial is my daily staple.
(digression: a reaaaaally beautiful silver (it looks gold from some angles) moth just landed on my Strategic Management textbook. it's so tiny, its entire wing-span is only about 1.5cm. pretty!)
yah, so about the show. it's so frivolous to watch! the scenes largely revolve around the same predictable plots. sun-bronzed bodies gliding in the water/ crying/ beautiful co-stars locked in a passionate embrace/ the sampat auntie accusing her husband of adultery/ crying/ backstabbing friend/ unrequited love/ and crying.
i think every character in the show has cried at some point or other, some much more frequently than others. HAH, no points for guessing who. though i must say Fiona Xie tackled the wailing scenes rather well today compared with the other sniffling/tearing scenes she has EVERY night. i almost burst out in tears myself. bah.
when it comes to shows with poor development of character roles, "The Champion" takes the cake. it's so easy to understand cos the characters are all supremely one-dimensional. Kaixin is the sweet, naive and wronged damsel with no flaws; Yilin is the backstabbing bitch with no redeeming factors; Jiajun is the indecisive guy caught in the middle who has a fondness for beginning a sentence like an introduction but never gets to the bloody thesis statement. jingwen is the big-hearted, responsible girl every guy would wanna bring home to his mummy, the entire Seagull swimming team is horrible horrible horrible, and everyone wants the Flying Fish team to trump the incumbent Seagulls eventually. this show promotes unanimous consensus! you know exactly who you're supposed to like and dislike; it's almost like they have neon markers flashing above their heads saying "Good Person" and "Bad Person". it's quick, it's easy, and it's mindless.
why think, when you can, yknow, don't?
oh, and everyone agrees that He Yixuan, who plays evil Yilin's elder sister is gorgeous. personally i think she resembles a goodlooking Zhang Ziyi. OH, and everyone also agrees that Rachel Lee cant act, cant speak (english nor mandarin) and looks bad in the show.
gosh, i cant wait for the next episode tmr.. im totally hooked on Jamie Yeo's "the look". chilling.
today, im thankful for:
the end of political-economy paper
dinner, finally, with Rachel & Peiting :)
a good sleep
effective study time
being offered a fun job
you, for thinking of me, and recommending me that job
help just when i needed it
help in the first place
another entertaining episode of "The Champion" :P

Chairman-Lecturer
things got fun when ping came online
HAHAHHA
we started discussing, no, gossiping, about *gasp* didja know? a certain lecturer who has a penchant for reminding us umpteen times that he chairs a certain council actually has a daughter who is married to Lee Hsien (which one??).
googling unearthed this website with numerous nuggets of interesting information superb for distracting us from studying for the exams due in 2 days. the website's not updated, we all know Lee Hsien Loong is not the DPM anymore, but the PM.
lookit the 2nd last row of the table. hmm, PM's sister-in-law is a Ms Lee Suet Fern. nope. doesnt match the surname of our chairman-lecturer. oh oh but lookit again! PM's sister-in-law's sister is a "Lim"! .................... logically, as ping pointed out, Chairman-Lecturer's daughter must have changed her surname to follow her husband's! this means Chairman-Lecturer's daughter married Lee Hsien Yang.
lookit all the influential positions the ppl in the table hold! it's like a, shhhhh, *whispers* Lee Monarchy.
curiously, PM's father-in-law is not listed in the table. PERHAPS this is due to the nature of the council in which Chairman-Lecturer heads... it's not exactly the kinda council which should have links with the government, much less extended family of the monar-, i mean, ruling family.
eh and if you read the first paragraph right under the table, Chairman-Lecturer's son is a Somebody too!
more scrolling later, i discovered something else. NTU's President, Dr Su Guaning, and his many posts are listed in the depths of the website too...
seems like almost everyone is a Somebody.
and we're the Nobodys, the small fries, who enjoy digging up stuff about them.
what a perfectly entertaining way to spend the afternoon!
readings be chucked!

Mondays
there's something about Mondays that agrees with me.
oh, i get the Monday Blues, for sure. Blues as in clearblueskies.
i defy common convention in that i dont get the dreary Monday Blues, and i dont thank the Lord for Fridays.
on the contrary, i love Mondays and dislike Fridays. i suspect it's got a lot to do with my personal scheduling, which positions Mondays as happy free-wheeling days, and Fridays as ex-BM351 days, and of course, the weather.
my mood correlates with the weather in a U-shape manner.
bright, sunny, clearblueskie rates me as "over the moon" on my moodchart, as does a raucous thunderstorm. hot & cloudy, humid, middle-of-the road weathers irk me; make up your mind if you wanna rain or shine! it makes me sweat, it makes tempers short, and it makes walking up steps and slopes (which i encounter plenty of where i stay) absolutely tiresome.
Mondays are also the days which seem to have the most sun and clearblueskies. where i am anyway. my friends dont seem to get the sun where they are even though singapore is so small.
and yknow, Mondays are magical for me for another reason: even when it rains, i dont get wet.
walking between raindrops is my speciality. :)
today, im thankful for:
clearblueskies
sun, when i needed it
rain, when i needed it
friends, when i needed them
tips, when i really needed them
curry, when i craved for it
good mood, when i didnt expect it
love, when i didnt ask for it
