sliding doors

looking at the pictures of you from long ago i see the happiness shining out of those unknowing eyes.

didn't think you were in for it, did you?

don't you wish you could crawl back into those pictures and re-live your life...

what would you have done differently?

would a different life be better anyway?

nasi lemak and stress

the malay stall auntie just told me that they'll be open until 2am starting from next monday cos the fasting season is coming. this means the availability of suppers for me! and rach might be able to get boon lay nasi lemak during the exam period through her connections :D im a blessed girl!!

after 4 hours of tutorials straight, i've been sitting at my desk singlemindedly rushing reports the whole afternoon until 9pm. conducted a phone interview with my dad for another report i have to complete in time for submission tmr. (cue crying smiley) my brain feels like mush. or cotton wool. soggy cotton wool.

am gonna enjoy some r&r now in front of the telly with my nasi lemak...

before i go back to more braindeadening work later. (cries some more)

playboy undies

rummaging through my wardrobe in hall and discovered an unopened box of the prettiest playboy undies tht i'd forgotten all about! thongs, really. pretty pack of 3 in red, pink and black and a diamante embossed playboy logo at the back of each one.

it feels like going shopping, seeing something you like, and discovering it's FREE! :D

Hall 2 exam goodie bag!!

Oooh oooooh!!

my roomie and i just received our exam goodie bags courtesy of Hall 2. it's got so so so many lil tidbits inside! we dropped everything we were doing and 'oooh'ed and 'ahh'ed over the fistfuls of things we pulled out of the bag. it's got so many more stuffs in it than ones we received from Hall 1 in the last two years (but then, we also paid more in Hall 2...):

  • 3 magazines here (8Days, Cleo, Style) compared with the sole, and predictable, FHM.
  • 3 types of drinks compared with the dented, and predictable, cans of Red Bull.
  • manymanymany lil packets of sweets/chocolates/crackers/coffee sachets compared with, erm, not much.
  • misc stuff which ARE useful, such as glade toilet air-freshener. ok i have to elaborate here. we have attached bathrooms in Hall 2. basically two hostel rooms will have a shared toilet between them so the cleaning and upkeep of the toilet is our responsibility and so air-freshener is definitely something pleasant to have. this, as compared to the weird lil bottle of fragrance thing we received from Hall 1 last year. the reason why it was weird was because we didnt know what the hell it was in the first place and the instructions were cryptic and totally unhelpful. i thought it was aromatherapy oil cos the bottle looked exactly like those which they sell oil in, with the tinted glass and black caps. but then my roomie thought it was something you apply directly onto your face cos of the words (which i dont rem anymore) on the bottle. in any case, before we ascertained what the hell it was, we most certainly weren't gonna let it touch our faces. promptly junked.
  • ok, it's almost confirmed tht we'll get things we dont use. like 'all purpose seasoning for deep frying' but then i guess it's ubiquitous across halls so they're forgiven :)
ok, most foodstuffs are probably gonna expire soon. more reason to gorge on junk food tonight!~ WOOOOHOOOOOO wahahahhahaaaa

(psst! im having fake-o ramli burger tonight too...)

entrepreneurial business plan competition

i know i whined about it no end in the last couple of weeks. i resented having so many brainstorming sessions and meetings which carried on from dusk till dawn. ok not dusk till dawn; more like from daylight till wee hours of the morning. it sucked up all my time, energy and brain juice and at the end of all these meetings, we usually dont get much decided on.

but we must have done something right. after all, we're chosen for the competition.

it doesnt matter how many presentations i've done throughout my 3 year marketing course here, i still fret. but i normally only get nervous on the day of the presentation itself. i dont lose sleep over it. and i've noticed that, like exams, the more jittery i am, the better the presentation usually turns out to be. im freaking out A WEEK in advance now... is this a good sign? :)

it's scaring the fucken shit out of me, but at the same time, im bloody excited as well.

im almost trembling with excitement and anticipation. LET ME PRESENT IT NOW!!

where do i go from here?

i want everything. i want nothing.
any outcome is as good as the next, because they are all that i want, and all that i dont.

"would you tell me, please, which way i ought to go from here?"

"that depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the cat.

"i dont much care where..." said Alice.

"then it doesnt matter which way you go," said the cat.

"... so long as i get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.

"oh, you're sure to do that," said the cat. "if you only walk long enough."

i feel like im standing at the beginning of a maze the kind you see in the sunday papers, or in archie comics.

in these mazes, there is (usually) only one way to get to your destination. most other routes lead you to dead ends, or crocodile pits, or big ethel chasing you. and then you have to retract your steps if you can and find the right path out.

if the bloody cat knows where these u-turns are, why wont he just say so?

you're supposed to learn something no matter which path you choose to take, and from the sticky patches you get caught in. it's the journey, after all, not the destination. that's what they say, isnt it?

but what if you're in the maze for months on end and with each passing day the maze grows bigger and more complicated and your chances of getting out unscathed is progressively shrinking? and you're tired, so tired. you dont even want to try anymore.

and what if there are others in the same maze and you can hear them screaming for help, but you cant reach them. are they nice people? will they be nice if you do find them? are 2, or 3, or 4 heads better than one? or will you just serve to confuse one another even more?

what if only one person can get out alive?

is it really that simple, like what the cat says, to take any path at random? what if i know the destination, but know not which direction to take the first step? or what if i know which direction to go, but have no idea what is in store for me at the end?

is it really all about taking chances?

what if i cant take anymore chances?

school fever

i had a good week last week.

no wait, hmm...

i think it's more accurate to say tht i had more good days than bad days last week, making it a *good* week overall.

i was a model student last week, turning up for every lecture and tutorial, save for one. tht was cos an impromptu gathering among 2 close friends resulted in me sleeping at 6am and not making class at 1030. but besides tht lil glitch there, i was a model student! really i was! i managed to churn out the reports and presentation parts i needed to complete (which we got an A for! wahahhaha!!!) and was actually ENTHUSIASTIC about lectures! literally bouncing to the lecture theatre and taking notes diligently even when, on one occasion, the lecturer carried on his 'sermon' in decreasing volume but increasing speed, and increasing chaos in the theatre. i really enjoyed school last week.

i told my friends, "let's milk it for wht it's worth now. cos it might last one semester, or it might last 15minutes. who knows?"

turns out it lasted one week. not too bad.

you think you know, but you have no idea

some ppl assume they know everything about a certain thing tht has happened, or tht they've got someone all figured out. and tht's despite the fact tht they were not present when it happened, or they dont even personally know the ppl who were involved, or tht *surprise surprise* they only know one side of the story.

you only know the story as told by one party, dude. any half-baked GP tutor will tell you tht tht's not the way to get an 'A'.

you know the gist of the story AS TOLD BY ONE PERSON. you know the circumstances in which it happened AS TOLD BY ONE PERSON. you know the emotions running through tht SAME ONE BLOODY PERSON.

sure, your ONE PERSON suffered. and it's only natural tht you'll empathise with your friend and take his/her stand, after all, tht's what friends do best right? tht's what friends are supposed to do right?

but then, how do you know tht your friend is telling the truth anyway? not tht your friend is lying, tht's not what im implying, but tht your friend might be telling the 'truth' as he/she knows it, and tht might not be the truth at all. or in the throes of complaining abt how poorthing he/she is, he/she might feel the need to spice up the story a lil, portray him/herself even more saliently as the victim, position him/herself in warmer lighting, and shed a little tear for effect.

doesnt it feel good to have the whole world sympathising with you? even if, at the end of the day, you're not quite sure if you deserved it? but if tht's what you want, if it makes you feel better, no harm done i guess.

NTU ranked 7th in Asia for its MBA programme

ooh, read this!
http://www.straitstimes.com.sg/latest/story/0,4390,276682,00.html

"In the first comparative ranking, NTU is the only university in Asean on the list."
i wonder what basis of comparison they used!

alicia keys concert

tonight, I FELT THE EARTH MOVE UNDER MY FEET.

the ALICIA KEYS CONCERT was AWESOME!!!!!!!

bah... i wish i bought tickets earlier, then ill get the most expensive tickets and run right up to the stage!! ohhh man.. she's making a groupie outta me!

she made me dance, she made me sing, and she even made me cry!
and it's not the tears-welling-in-the-eyes kind either; i had tears continuously rolling down both cheeks! some of her slow songs are just so freaking sad, and she performs them so soulfully that i cant help being moved. and i wasnt the only one ok!

and the crowd was GREAT!! everyone was totally hyped up and eager for more, more, more of Alicia Keys. i literally felt the ground beneath my feet waver. when she left the stage, the stompings for an encore was frightening. then the stompings for yet another encore was even more so. the dancing caused the metal structure we were sitting on to sway and at no less than 5 occasions did i seriously doubt the sturdiness of the architecture.

* * *

i dont usually like to go to music concerts, cos first of all, i believe that most singers, even the popular ones, stink at singing live. what's the point of paying good money to listen to him/her mangle up the songs?? i get much better quality singing listening to their (heavily produced) CD. or rather, their mp3 downloads.

but Alicia Keys... she's amazing when she sings live! spectacularly amazing

i swear the next time i get to see another one of her concerts, ill be there, right in front of her stage.

mid-autumn festival

i'd written a fairly long post on celebrating the mid-autumn festival in school last tuesday when i did something stupid to shut down my computer. how sian. pardon me if i seem to lack enthusiasm in writing this piece as i literally withered when i saw my screen zap to a blank.

here's the gist of it then.

sheer laziness saw me rotting in hall when i couldve gone home to eat mooncakes, sip chinese tea and shang yue with my family. i was feeling lonely cos my roommate had gone home and the campus was strangely quiet as if it was the holidays and everyone's gone home to stay. it seemed like only the foreign students were left.

then a few of us had an impromptu celebration at the Yunnan Gardens in campus armed with a camera, packets of pokka green tea (it's no chinese tea, but green is better then none), a couple of mooncakes, birthday candles and no lanterns.

you cant see much of the garden, but it was lit up by numerous candles and lanterns put up by the other revellers. there were manymany more hostelites left than i'd initially thought. those candlelights you see near the bottom of the photo were put up by us.

then cherm&kel decided to come down to join us for a while.

at midnight, cherm turned 21!!!

we turned a mooncake into a birthday cake and stuck a candle in the middle (red is auspicious!). our mid-autumn festival became a mini birthday celebration for cherms!

by the time i got back to my room, it was 4 plus in the morning and i pottered around until 6. ive never actually celebrated mid-autumn festival before... usually ill just eat mooncake and imagine tht the moon was grinning at me. i dont even carry lanterns. what made this one so special was tht it was done impromptu and between friends. and the setting was totally appropriate. Yunnan Gardens had all the pavillions and stone walkways and things like tht.

'twas seriously the funnest mid-autumn festival ive ever had.

handphone woes

this past week has been a fucked up one for me in all matters relating to handphones. mine in particular.

you name it, ive probably fucked it up.

first, the number '6' on my keypad conked out. assuming that it'd malfunctioned cos id gotten water into it earlier in the day, i removed the battery and attempted to revive it by blowing it with a hair dryer at the advice of a friend who'd actually remedied a similar situation tht manner.

not only did this method not work, i realised to my utter horror, that i couldnt turn my phone on because i had a phone lock code which needed the use of the number '6'!

after about 2 hours of abject frustration, i managed to reset my phone lock code using my roommate's mobile phone.

then followed a couple of days of inconvenience as i couldnt SMS properly. seriously, HOW in the fucking world am i supposed to SMS without the use of the 'm', 'n' and 'o' letters?! words like 'go', 'come', 'im', or even my very own name were out of the question. how creative would i have to be to think of alternative words for every one containing those evil letters?! every SMS which i did manage to send became masterpieces in my eyes... i was actually able to communicate my thoughts effectively even when handicapped! applause please!

eventually i started using the number 0 to replace 'o' and the summation symbol to represent a lopsided 'm'. and some unknown symbol (im told it's the 'sigma' sign) to resemble 'n'. my SMSes came out looking like some act-cute, hello kitty-worshipping ah lian's. (oh, filee shld post a pic of tht mooncake SMS!)

due to my bad experience with phone locks, i decided to disable the function. i'd used both sim locks and phone locks since the days of yore cos i figured that in the event of losing my handphone, no one else would get to use my phone at my expense. if i cant use it, ill make sure he/she cant either. id rather render it useless than to let some stranger who'd picked it up or stolen it use it. but then i was unnerved enough by tht bad experience to decide to disable it. better be safe than sorry again right?

the very next day, i lost the freaking phone.

FUCK

what a supreme coincidence.

i wasnt as upset as i thought i'd be. my roomie and yvette who were with me at tht time were surprised at how calm i appeared to be. i guess it was just the "damn, but then, what can i do abt it now anyway" mentality tht ive learned to adopt recently. im not sure if tht's a good or bad thing, but tht's another story for another day.

i shall not bore you with the nittygritty details, but i have my reasons to believe that it's unlikely the phone is gonna be useful to whoever picked it up besides the fact that it has a failed keypad.

nevertheless, the LG7100 is really a great phone. it's user-friendly, and has all the functions that i could want or need. plus, i absolutely loveee the way i can flick the clamshell cover open and close with one hand and the wonderful "clack" sound it makes. yknow some clamshell phones are actually quite 'lembek' and you feel like you're opening or closing a book rather than a high-technology device.

"CLACK"

love it.

although ive only had my LG for a mere 10 months, i think i miss it more than the 8210 which i used for 3 years prior and which ive always maintained is the 'love of my life'. well, perhaps the sense of loss of the 8210 was abated cos i had a new toy, the LG, to play with instead. erhhmm... i need a new toy now then... only that i cant afford one, and i wont ask my parents to sponsor me one.

anyway, while i was still staying in hall, i was handphone-less. not having a handphone is scary. my dad fancies tht youngsters these days treat a handphone like one of their limbs. in his own words, "how can you suddenly live without a limb?" how did people actually meet up with the people they're scheduled to meet at a certain time before the days of handphones?! what if someone's late? just wait? and wait and wait?

to be honest, i felt severe heart palpitations when the friend i was supposed to meet did not turn up at the appointed time. i had no way of contacting her as i dont carry a phone card. bah, i couldnt even tell the time without the handphone cos i dont wear a watch. completely lost was how i felt. she's never late... why isnt she here then? should i wait here? or maybe she couldnt make it at the last minute and was unable to inform me? should i go do the rest of my shopping on my own? what if she turns up? i was pacing the shop round and round looking like a total idiot and i knew it.
shoppers look at the clothes on the racks.
i was examining the face of every person who walked into the shop.

Question : what to do if you oversleep and isnt sure when the break time is so you can slip into class?

Answer : hope tht Ping's in your class cos she will go out of her way to find some way of communicating with you.

it's almost absurd lar, the lengths she went to to get a computer to send me a MSN message. thanks babe!! :*

truly, life without the handphone is almost unbearable. i mean, it's not like im on a nice, relaxing beach resort getaway where the handphone can potentially be a nuisance. i need it to communicate with people!

and then there was the quarrel between my mum and my sis which i inadvertently caused. apparently there was some disagreement as to which spare phone - mum's or sis' - i was to inherit. neither was explicit in declining, but both were silently shooting daggers and tossing snide remarks at each other across the room.

eventually i ended up with ... *ta daaa!* my mum's spare 8210.

some loves never die.

and THEN, (yes there's one more spot of trouble i got into with the handphone) in a bid to not make the same bloody mistake of disabling the phone & sim lock, i set out to change the appropriate codes in the 8210. of course, i didnt know what were the codes already in use, but i assumed that my mum didnt care enough to change them in the first place, so i used the default codes. alas! memory did not serve me well! i couldnt quite remember one of the codes, which led to the unfortunate BLOCKING OF MY REPLACEMENT SIM CARD WHICH I HAD ACTIVATED JUST AN HOUR EARLIER.

somebody shoot me.

all's well now... for now... but sunday's still one more day. hopefully it's just a one week funk, and not a month-long or year-long thing (WAHAHAHA). shit, i dont wanna jinx it. i better shuddup now.

as a parting note, i just wanna say,

OH BOY!
(high-fives for those who get this! :D)

like it can threaten to overflow into my consciousness anytime

but then it's not

i feel like i shld be very very sad...

and somewhere in me, i AM very sad, but i cant really locate where

so i cant really feel it after all.
