'goodbye' really is the hardest word

although there's still 1.5 semesters more to go before i graduate from the University of Boon Lay, i feel like it's all coming to an end.

my days in this school,
having a home away from home,
basically being a student.

the role of a student is one i have assumed all my life; i dont remember ever not being one.

a whole era of my life is coming to an end.

and im getting nostalgic before i even have the right to!

since the commencement of my third and final year here, ive been preparing saying the inevitable goodbye to everyone and everything ive gotten to know and love in this place, even people ive just met, and things ive just encountered. this was never the place that i wanted to be in in the first place, but ive gradually assimilated to life here and even learned to love certain aspects of it. and now just when i can say im finally happy here, im hit with the realisation that it's going to be over all too soon. im starting my semester with my eye on the finishing line.

ive begun the process of saying goodbye when it's all just starting.

because goodbyes are tough. and sometimes you dont even get a proper chance to bid adieu.

i dont want to wait until it's all over before i realise how much ill miss it. regret is something i dont want in my life, and regretting that i didn't pay enough attention and did not treasure it when i had it will just kill me.

but isnt it kind of pathetic? what kind of dysfunctional being would focus on the ending when it's really just the beginning? do i really need so much lead time and prepping just to let go? i never used to be like that.

and here i am, using my five senses to try to etch it all into memory. where it fails to suffice, i look for more lasting permanence by taking pictures. i find myself taking snapshots feverishly. people, scenary, impromptu pictures, whatever. the camera is always within easy reach and the battery charger has a fixed spot on the multi-adapter. my latest occupation is being a full-time camera whore. pictures were taken of the magnificent view from my end of the corridor in the 2nd week of my moving in. lengthy journal entries are written painstakingly describing every minute detail about something seemingly trivial. even this blog, although imperfect in its upkeep, serves as some form of chronicling. im taking in as much as i can because i know ill have to let go eventually at some point.

lest you misunderstand, it's not the school that ill necessarily miss. it's what it stands for, and what it says about me. leaving the school is synonymous with leaving a huge chunk of my self-aspect behind. i wish i can say im ready and excited about the challenges that lay ahead, but im seriously not. dread is probably a better way to describe how i feel about this impending change. i want to seize everything about now in my arms and hold them to my heart and commit them to memory.

it's cruel for you to force me to say goodbye when im not ready to.

How do you find the words to say
To say goodbye
When your heart don't have the heart to say
To say goodbye

diary of a nuaing queen

i feel so dumb. i spent the night (morning, really) preparing the group's presentation slides then give that same lesson a total miss. it's really cos by the time i'd finished formatting everything, it was already 6am, and considering the meagre sleep ive been surviving on the past week, i didnt think there was even a faint chance of me making class at 1030.

but then look at me now, and look at the time!

if i just fall back to sleep now, ill at least still have some reason to skip class right? but then, who'll know anyway. everyone's in class! hmm.. actually, it's more like who cares anyway right.

it's all gloomy and rainy out so it's a fantastic day to nua indoors!!

although this means that we cant tan today, and all tht effort we put into, erhm, excusing ourselves from other committments just for it has gone to waste. damn! sinned for nothing. HAHAHA

sin sin sin

isnt it strange how the human psyche can get used to just about anything if given time? im talking specifically about committing a wrongdoing. the first time is always traumatic. you're plagued with guilt, you probably cant sleep well and you berate yourself no end. but then over time you gradually get used to the fact that you've committed this offense, you get over the guilt trip and you find that repeating the dirty deed becomes easier and easier. i truly believe that we all have the potential to be cold-blooded murderers.

my latest offense: i told a huge lie today.

'twas no white lie. it was planned in advance, followed through with appropriate acting and executed with full intentions to deceive. it was a horrible thing to do, but i dont even feel half as bad as i think i should have. i guess perhaps this is the mark of a person so steeped in sin that you dont even feel remorseful anymore.

i am beyond redemption, really.

i wanna be a kid again!

i dont feel 21, im too young to be 21... how come im forced to pretend im mature mentally and emotionally just cos i've hit a certain age? i feel i can go back to secondary school days and still feel very much at home, thank you very much.

being a teenager is great. i remember liv tyler quoted as saying that "17 is the best age to be because you're old enough to do stuff, and yet young enough to get away with it".

the way i see it, any age between 13-21 is good. if you do something that is beyond your expected mental capabilities or display extraordinary maturity for your age, you're deemed a precocious kid, wise beyound your years, a genius even. but if you do stupid stuff or get into trouble, society is more forgiving cos after all, youre a kid. who's to say you know any better, right? stab someone and you go to a girl's/boy's home. kids always get off light.

kids these days

kids these days are just too techno-savvy.

today i came across a blogskin done by a 13yr old girl. i know cos she linked her personal blog to the skin she made. and yknow what? she had a looong list of friends' bloglinks on her page, possibly indicating that almost every one of her classmates (all-girls school) has a blog.

this can only mean one thing: that anyone of them can probably trump any one of my friends at HTML.

the blog skin she made wasnt awesome or anything like that, but it was well-made nevertheless. a peek into her source codes and you know she knows her stuff. oh, HTML really is extremely interesting and the amount you can learn seems neverending. from that one girl's blog, i learned 4 or 5 tricks to make my own blog sleeker and prettier. (i read books and i adore HTML. altogether now, what does that make me?!)

honestly kids are incredible. the speed at which they pick up new skills is astounding. i remember how as a kid my dad would think i was damn smart cos i mastered the use of all 3 different video tape recorders at home without consulting the manuals. i would then painstakingly coach mum & dad how to record programmes step by step, over and over again. it seemed absurd to me why anyone would need the manual. these electronic stuff are pretty straightforward, yeah? fiddle around with a few buttons and you'll surely get somewhere.

but HO! me as a kid then definitely wouldnt be able to hold a candle to kids these days!

heck, even me as of now couldnt come near...

but i cannot give up!

my goal is to make my first blog skin by year's end!!!

"The Mother"

over the weekend, i caught "The Mother".

if you havent already heard, it's about a 60ish, recently-widowed mother who shags her daughter's lover.

there there many ways you can choose to interpret this movie, making it pretty complex i suppose. i liked it because it spoke to me about people living as if in a waking dream, not daring to fulfil their dreams because they're living out the expectations of society, or of someone else. it's awakening from a sleepy existence, wanting to experience life anew, as your alter ego. as soon as she said it, it became clear where the focus and theme for the movie was for me.

"Dear God, let us be alive before we die"

(oh i just found out that the tagline for the movie is 'it can take a lifetime to feel alive')

my movie buddy didnt like the movie though.

she had a different take on the movie, seeing it as yet another cinematic attempt at rehashing the same issues of betrayal, people making mistakes, forgiveness or lack thereof etc.

i also particularly liked that the movie is unabashed about scenes which will inevitably cause some dissension for its sheer political-incorrectness. i wasnt talking about the sex scenes btw the self-confessed "shapeless old lump" and the 30ish toned & buff builder who is renovating her son's home.

it might seem revolting at first, but trust me, there are worse things to come, which ironically, is actually how we view the natural order of things to be.

it's strange really... i havent sorted out my feelings about this movie. there's a lingering sense of sadness throughout the movie, yet when i think about it, there is really nothing that much to be sad about. it's really a tale of life, of love, and triumph.

rain and laundry

it is oft said that the weather in london is erratic.

im really not sure about london, not having been there to witness it for myself, but i can safely assure you that the weather here in singapore is sometimes nothing short of bizarre.

take today for example!

i arrived in hall at 9am cursing the glorious sunny weather because it is the one day out of the last seven with any remote chance of me getting a tan, and the school pool is closed.

well, at least i can wash my laundry right? sun is good. sun is very very good for drying clothes right?

right right right???

i happily tipped my bedsheets, oh those with the thick quilt covers, into the machine. oh, and a couple of those huge furry bath towels too, thanks! oh look! the other machine is empty! i really should make use of the fabulous sun now to wash my clothes too! yay!

when i returned to my room, wa-hey! who turned out the lights? no, i mean it. who turned out the natural light that was filtering in through the windows?

that's weird. maybe it's a really big cloud. yknow, those kind erm.. that you find... in... southeast asia? it'll pass, im sure. the cloud will just kinda drift along and the sun will come out again! yes!

hmm... it's getting darker though. the cloud must be REALLY big and dense with raindrops which will not fall here. yes, cos it's moving along. yes.

*GASP*

this cant be, right?

no.

no.

noooooooo!!!

... ...

sigh, yes.

there is not much more depressing than to hang wet laundry when it's raining outside. it's just me, isn't it? it's just not my thing to be washing laundry, is it?

why couldnt the cosmos just humour me once a while?!

met jill&rz today and took many pictures!

it's weird how we're such good friends but we dont have "decent pictures" to show for it. so i brought my camera today and took many many! took pics of the yummyyummyyummy food we ate too! mygod, was dreaming and drooling for sushi tei for so long. finally had my sashimi salad and dragon rolls! *faint and gone to heaven* cant post pictures as yet cos im home for the holidays and i left my canon connecting cable in hall. the waiters were staring while i took the pics. aei, get over it lar.

speaking of holidays, my mom asked me this,
"is this one week break a time for you to study or rest?"

i replied in my most hoity-toity, isnt-it-obvious manner, "the school calls it a STUDY BREAK so it's a BREAK from STUDIES! of cos it's a time to rest!"

im not sure if it's entirely true of cos, but tht's how i choose to interpret it. i didnt bring home any textbooks or lecture notes for revision, only Sophie's World, which i intend to finish this week and get started on the 2 books i borrowed from the library today.

im feeling really happy today. i truly dont know why.

today, im grateful for:
getting my favourite seat on the bus
rain outside while im sleeping soundly indoors
damn good food
great company
pretty pictures!

breaking in my blades

these are the model of my blades

i finally went blading today! you might remember the time i posted about buying new blades. yes, it's been that long before i break them in! i think the right blade is a lil too small for my foot though... my big toenail hurts from being squashed inside.

today, im grateful for:
clearblueskies
the parting of the rainclouds when i wanted to blade
the arrival of the storm which made it so fun to blade
not falling even once!
a bouyant mood

do a Clay Aiken, perform a miracle

speaking of William Hung. i wonder if they'll be able to do a Clay Aiken on him.

like so

from geek to gorgeous. an extreme makeover without the knifes (i think).

# | | 19:11

who gives a damn about William Hung now?

for those not in the know, William Hung (seen below in his infamous blue shirt-thing)

arrived at our shores this past friday and graced Channel U with his presence. as a judge. as a judge of a TALENT CONTEST, no less. this must be a cruel joke right?

it's true. read it here:
http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/showbiz/story/0,5348,271715,00.html

this is the show that he appeared as a judge in

Channel U might have gotten something right in inviting him though. notice the name of the talent program. it's "The Next Big Thing". no one actually said anything about being talented/goodlooking/witty right? granted the chinese title had the words 'idol' in it, but hasnt Wills proven that talent/goodlooks/wit are NOT prerequisites of being an idol? how comforting for the contestants!

ahhh, therein lies the purpose in spending much much moolah in getting Wills on our sunny island. he's the living example that you dont needa have much, to be The Next Big Thing! (disclaimer: period of fame varies)

still, if Wills had come probably 6 months earlier, im sure more ppl would have given two hoots about it.

call my bluff

ay...

i cant call the bluff of someone else because then ill have to reveal why im privy to information allowing me to come to that conclusion. simply put, i cant call your bluff cos then you can call mine.

damn, i guess that's what you get for being unrighteous.

oh well

looking for Sandy Lam's "Get There"

ok, remember the guy from the first round of semi-finals on 'Singapore Idol' who wore the V-neck black sweater? the one whom the judges say can only appeal to the "niche audience who listens to chinese music"?

im looking for the song he sang by Sandy Lam, called "Get There". the lyrics are beautiful and no matter what the judges say, i felt his performance moved me.

and please arh Ken Lim, whaddaya mean "niche audience who listens to chinese music"?! dont you know that FM933 is the radio station that has the highest number of listeners in singapore? perhaps Florence Lian being the DJ (at where anyway?) forgot to inform you.

the chinese-speaking crowd is NOT the minority. i realised tht when i came to university that we were the martians, not them. i thought i found this out late.

but ken is still absolutely clueless.

i am a considerate drunkard.

i take off my shoes while walking, ok stumbling, back to hall so i wont wake my neighbours.

ok that's not the real reason.

it was due more to the fact tht my pointy heels were giving me blisters.

and im also not considerate to the sweet auntie who mops the corridors. cos i puked on them.

a few times.

and on the stairs too.

and i must be the dirtiest creature in existence.

because i didnt shower before sleeping.

remember that i walked barefoot back to my room? yup, from the bus stop.

and even though not a single soul was awake to witness my ugly behaviour, im totally appalled at myself. i swear this will be my first AND last time.

ironic

an old man turned 98
he won the lottery, died the next day
it's a black fly in your chardonnay
it's a death row pardon, 2 minutes too late

and isn't it ironic
don't you think?

it's like rain on your wedding day
it's a free ride when you've already paid
it's the good advice that you just didn't take
and who would've thought it figures?

mr play-it-safe was afraid to fly
he packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
he waited his whole damn life to take that flight
and as the plane crashed down, he thought
'well isn't this nice?'

and isn't it ironic
don't you think?

life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
when you think everything's ok and everything's going right
and life has a funny way of helping you out
when you think everything's gone wrong
and everything blows up in your face

a traffic jam when you're already late
a 'no smoking' sign on your cigarette break
it's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
it's meeting the man of my dreams
and then meeting his beautiful wife

and isn't it ironic
don't you think?

it's wanting to forget, but doing something stupid to bring it all back again
it's having a tummy that is hungry, but which rejects all food
it's being really happy, while being really depressed
it's completing all your assignments, only to skip classes
it's listening to happy songs when you're sad
and singing along to sad songs when you're happy
it's when a compliment is not really one at all
it's when you hate these morons, but you know they are who make the world so interesting
it's like the dirty linen that you're just so tempted to air
it's having nightmares tinged with love
it's knowing the right thing to do, but just not doing it
it's wondering if this person is a friend. having to wonder shows something
it's ostracising the mad, when we're all mad in our own ways
it's hating the love you've been given because it asks for nothing in return
it's when the happier people can be, the unhappier they are
it's when you've lost all hope and as a result you perk up and feel much better
it's like the malcontented who yearn to be what they condemn
it's when the darkness is more comforting than the light
it's when the more you pursue it, the more it eludes you
and the harder you try to avoid it, the keener it seeks you out
